Our mission

Zoe Bayliss Cooperative is a community of women and non-binary higher education students who share responsibilities for maintaining the house to keep costs as affordable as possible, and we welcome students from many different backgrounds. The purpose of this organization shall be to create an experience in responsible, cooperative living and to encourage academic and personal exploration in a flexible, open, and friendly atmosphere.

Amenities

Our house supports 43 residents and has furnished single, double, triple, and quadruple rooms for rent. ZB is a short walk from State Street, the University Bookstore, and Lake Mendota, with route 80 stopping right across the road. The yard includes a walled-in courtyard with multiple garden plots and sitting areas, as well as a beautiful magnolia tree. 10 meals per week are prepared by our in-house chef during the academic year. Living here, residents can also gain language experience and learn about various cultures from peers from around the country and the world.

History

1955

Located at 915 W Johnson St, ZB originally formed in 1955 as one of five student housing cooperatives on the UW-Madison campus.

2022

After 67 years, UW–Madison announced plans to demolish ZB to make space for the Irving and Dorothy Levy Hall. After months of fundraising and advocacy to preserve the last remaining student-run community focused on affordable, inclusive housing, we were able to form a partnership with Madison Community Cooperative (MCC) and continue supporting women and non-binary higher education students.

Now

ZB joined MCC in 2023, and now calls the beautiful house at 636 Langdon Street home. We are a lovely, welcoming community who proudly support each other on our personal and academic endeavors.
